Most digital cameras today can use NiMH rechargeable batteries. These batteries will last for many years, but will discharge in about two weeks when not in use. These are the same type batteries used in electric and hybrid cars.
These batteries will operate most cameras for about three hours depending the charge and camera use.
The Cannon SD750 (black) seems to be one of the best cameras for the money.

Also, consider similar cameras with optical view finders. This really helps in bright sun.
